Start with the drinks and repetitions you actually make. Compare boiler or reservoir capacity, warm-up routine, shot cadence, steam capability, electrical requirements, counter depth, and overhead room for the lever. A larger integrated boiler can support more consecutive drinks, but it also adds hot surfaces and a pressure-management routine. If milk drinks matter, verify that steaming and brewing fit your sequence; if you make one straight espresso, simpler handling may be more valuable than capacity or extra gauges.
Treat an espresso-capable grinder and a scale as part of the system, not optional accessories. Published modeling and café experiments identify grind setting, coffee mass, water pressure, temperature, and beverage volume as interacting variables; particle-size distribution also affects puck permeability and flow. Favor a grinder with small, repeatable adjustments, then change one variable at a time and record dose and beverage mass. A lever and gauge cannot compensate for an inconsistent grind or an uncontrolled recipe.
Ask how the design establishes brew temperature, creates pressure, and lets you repeat both. Manufacturer documentation for a traditional boiler lever specifies manual pressure, a brass brew group, a pressurestat, and roughly five minutes to reach operating pressure, while espresso research shows that pressure is only one part of extraction. Prefer controls and indicators you can interpret during a shot, a stable base under lever force, and a workflow that makes preheating and shot-to-shot consistency practical rather than merely possible.
Look past decorative finishes and inspect the load-bearing and wet-path details: frame stability, lever and pivot hardware, brew-group and boiler materials, basket dimensions, and access to seals, valves, gauges, and heating parts where fitted. Before buying, confirm that the maker publishes the correct manual and an exploded spare-parts document for the exact model or model code. Documentation and model-specific parts are stronger long-term ownership signals than feature count because routine wear can be diagnosed and serviced without guessing.
Read the manual before purchase for depressurization, cleaning, and service limits. On an integrated boiler lever, the maker warns that the group, boiler, portafilter, and steam wand remain hot, and that the boiler cap must not be opened while pressurized; these requirements materially affect daily use. Check whether the brewer has an integrated heater or requires separately heated water and manual preheating, then compare basket diameter, dose range, machine weight, portability, counter clearance, and the force needed to pull a shot. If you want automated temperature and pump pressure, a semi-automatic machine may be more suitable.
Usually, yes—especially with a non-pressurized basket. The coffee bed must create the resistance needed for espresso, so small grind changes can materially alter pressure, flow, and shot time. A burr grinder with fine, closely spaced adjustments gives more control than a blade or filter-focused grinder. A pressurized basket can be more tolerant, but it offers less direct control over extraction.
